What are age spots?
Age spots, also known as brown spots, liver spots or sunspots, occur on ageing or sun-damaged skin and can most commonly be found on the hands, back, chest and arms. The appearance of age spots is not, contrary to what the name may suggest, always related to age. Age spots occur due to an excessive concentration of melanin (pigmentation) in the skin. While age is one factor affecting melanin concentration, sun exposure is the other most common cause of age spots. If left untreated, age spots may continue to become darker and more noticeable.

How can they be treated?
Using Vasculight technology with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), we apply targeted bursts of light energy to the affected area. Each pulse produces specific wavelengths of light which are absorbed into the problem patches of skin. High concentrations of melanin absorb this light energy, breaking them down and reducing or removing the age spot without damaging any of the surrounding skin cells. Heat energy also stimulates cells that produce elastin and collagen. This elastin and collagen regeneration or growth reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and leaves the skin looking fresher, healthier and revitalised. The overall effect is a lightening or removal of age spots.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many treatments will I need?
The amount of treatments needed will depend on the extent of your age spots. Due to the high specifity of the Vasculight IPL system, you will need fewer treatments than if you were being treated with inferior laser equipment. A full treatment plan will be discussed with the nurse practitioner during your consultation
Will it hurt?
Some patients feel a stinging sensation during treatment, but it does not hurt. The treatment is relatively straightforward, so you will be able to return to your daily routine almost immediately. Patients may experience redness following treatment. This will subside after a few hours and can be covered using make up.
When will I see the results?
Age spots should be noticeably reduced after the first treatment and skin will feel rejuvenated. Repeated treatments will yield improved results.
